To Heaven and Back
The author added some really great ways to add suspense to the novel. The author started by telling the story from farther ahead than you already know about the character. By also having them drive down isolated road with no hope of seeing a another person for miles, it made the situation even more dire. Finally by having only small children teens and elderly you also add on to the idea of no hope.

Gaiaphage
On the way to the mineshaft, Drake and Jack have a fall out. Jack has super strength and Drake has a tentacle for an arm (yes, a tentacle), so this won’t be good. Jack tries to kill Drake because he has tried to kill everyone around them at one point or another. Jack throws Drake 300 feet away, but the toss doesn't kill him (sadly, for everyone that he has tried to kill). Drake, because he knows he can't take Jack, turns his anger on Diana. He has always wanted to kill her because she always makes him angry and he was on a rampage. When Drake goes after Diana, her boyfriend, Caine, the most powerful person in all of the FAYZ, tries to come to her aide. Unfortunately, he is carrying a ginormous radioactive tube that if it broke all the FAYZ would die. He drops tube and uses his power of telekinesis to throw Drake backwards. But before Caine can stop him, Drake throws Diana back onto a sharp rock and almost kills her.
This battle is the most significant thing that has happened in the past chapter of the book, Hunger by Michael Grant. Diana is down for the count and Drake has gotten thrown around quite a bit. Caine, Duck and Sam (who is severely injured) all travel into the depths of the collapsed mineshaft to find Lana (the healer) to save Diana. The worst part was that she was trapped down there and being controlled by the "gaiaphage". Michael Grant describes the "gaiaphage" as "...more lump than any define shape. A seething hive of rushing, twisting, greenish crystals"(Grant 94%). By describing it as a lump and a hive, it gives the gaiaphage a grueling thought in our mind. When I think about hives, I think of thousands of unpleasant nasty creepy crawlies. Lumps aren't much better either.

Wordle of Hunger by: Micheal Grant
(whoops I can't figure out how to crop out the edges) I love the use of Wordle becasue you can see the most important words becasue they appear larger and more bold than the lesser used words.
The Words and Their Meaning
Darkness: It is the main evil villian in the book who is trying to kill every one
Radiation: Darkness lives off of radiation and it was the cause of the Fayz
Lana: She is the all powerful healer in the book who has gone awall and left the beach by herself becasue she felt over used
Perdio Beach: This is the main place that the characters live at but there are a few stragalers who live out on their own
FAYZ: the FAYZ stands for "Fallout Ally Youth Zone" this is the nickname for all of the area under the dome
Caine: He is the long lost brother of Sam, but he hates him becasue their mom chose Sam over him. He also is the most powerful of all the kids
Sam: He is the main character who is trying to keep the peace among all the kids who are mad at each other
Poof: This is the word that all the kids used to described how there parents disappeard almost 3 months ago
Gone: This was the name of the first book that started out the series
Diana: She is Caine's girlfriend and can read peoples powers and how strong said power is
Starvation: The kids can't think of anything else but the thought of starving. They havn't eaten in weeks and are slowly dying off.
Death: This is something that happens way to often in a group of kids. The kids are slowly dying and being able to stop it.
Hunger: This is the title of the book and it is very fitting to what is going on in the story thus far.
Superpowers: Everyone is starting to posses and find what superpowers that are emerging among them
Chaos: There are kids dying, starving and killing... yeah it's a little crazy....

Sound Track for Hunger
How Far Is Heaven- Kitty Wells
This song is
about how a kid is missing her parents and she wonders how far away heaven is
and when she will be able to get back to her parents because she misses them so
much. This song relates to Hunger because the kids are in a giant bubble and
they don’t know how far away or where there parents are so they want to know
how to get to them.
Oh Very Young- Cat Stevens
This
song is about how a little kid passed away and left his/her parents alone to
grieve her death. This song is the opposite of Hunger because the parents left
and the kids were left behind to grieve the loss of their parents. When the
parents leave all the kids they will never be able to back and find there
parents.
The Living Years- Mike and the
Mechanics
This song is about a guy missing his father
because he has passed away and the guy never got the chance to say all the
things that he had wanted to say. Also the guy is regretting not leaving things
complete with his parent because he left so unexpectedly. This directly relates
to Hunger because Sam was mad at his mom for not always being there when he
needed her but now that she is gone he misses her and regrets ever being mad at
her.
Gravedigger- Willie Nelson
This
song offers a different perspective on dying, the author says Gravedigger -
When you dig my grave- Could you make it shallow-So that I can feel the rain-
Gravedigger. By having this in there it shows that the dead can still watch
over you and protect you. This song relates to Hunger because the kids are
dying from starvation and are being buried in shallow graves.

Darkness
Darkness has taken over.
People aren't in there right minds.
Something powerful and hungry has appeared in the mine shafts.
The "something" is called Darkness. Darkness takes over your brain and can talk to you through your mind. The Darkness feeds off radiation that it has absorbed from the earth until now. Ten years ago there was a radiation meltdown from the nuclear power plant. The government said that they had cleaned it up but really they had dug a big hole and let it drain in to the earth. The street closes to the power plant is called "Fall Out Alley" because of the meltdown. The cause of all the kids getting powers is because of the radiation they where exposed to at such a young age. I don't know about you but I wouldn't wanna live in an area called "Fall Out Alley"

Powerless
No power.
Everything is dark.
Caine and his people have taken over the the power plant. Sam has lost the "Breeze" she was the fastest way to get any Infomation to the FAYZ. Jack switched sides and is helping Caine take over and all the FAYZ. By turning off the lights only where Sam lives Caine is taking control.
But... Caine isn't all there...
He is being controlled by the Darkness. By controlling the power plant he has all the radiation that he could possibly want. Since the Darkness controls him, Caine is bringing some of the radiation to the mineshaft to feed the Darkness. Once the Darkness is feed there is no telling what it is possible if doing.
Caine is making a huge mistake.

Gone by Micheal Grant
Gone.
Poof.
Everyone above the age of 15 has disappeared.
What do you do?
Freak out.
Cry.
Destroy stuff.
Well… if you live in within 20 miles of the Perdido Beach
Power Plant, your life has just done a 360. First of all you’re in a giant impenetrable
sphere and everyone thinks they can do anything. Everyone is in a panic when
some of the 7th graders decide it’s a good idea to burn down an
apartment building…with kids in it. Sam steps up and stops the fire but none of
the kids survive. Everyone is looking to Sam as if he was their dad. The
problem is that same is going to turn 15 in 12 days and then poof, the leader
of Perdido Beach will be Gone like the rest of the adults. With the 12 days
that Sam, potentially, has left he:
Finds all the food left in houses
Finds all the children left in houses
Guards the grocery store from invasion
Some people didn’t respond as well as Sam did… Kids are
crying. Kids are drinking. Kids are smoking. Kids are dying. The bullies are
also trying to take over and bully Sam out of the leadership position. The worst part is that people are starting to
develop powers that develop from there hands like: Lasers, Fire, Super Speed, Telekinesis,
and Invisibility. Now the kids that aren’t
starting to develop powers are starting to break away from the kids that are.
They aren’t trusting them and calling them “freaks”. The whole society is falling to pieces but who’s
there to stop it?
There’s no adults.
